COFFEE: What's the difference between light, medium, and dark roast coffees?
Light roast, medium roast, and dark roast are terms used to describe the degree to which coffee beans have been roasted. The roasting process significantly impacts the flavor, aroma, and overall characteristics of the coffee.
- Light Roast:
- Characteristics: Light roast coffee beans have a light brown color and a dry surface. They retain more of their original flavor and exhibit higher acidity and brightness.
- Flavor Profile: Light roasts often have more pronounced floral, fruity, and citrusy notes. They tend to showcase the unique characteristics of the coffee's origin.
- Body: Light roasts generally have a lighter body, meaning they feel less heavy in the mouth.
- Roasting Time: Light roasting involves the shortest roasting time, as the beans are taken out of the roaster before they develop the darker flavors and oils associated with longer roasting.
- Medium Roast:
- Characteristics: Medium roast coffee beans are medium brown in color and have a balanced surface texture. They strike a balance between preserving the coffee's original flavors and developing some roasty, caramelized notes.
- Flavor Profile: Medium roasts offer a combination of the bean's natural flavors and the roasting process's influence. They often have a slightly sweeter taste with notes of chocolate and nuttiness.
- Body: Medium roasts generally have a medium body, falling between the lighter and heavier ends of the spectrum.
- Roasting Time: Medium roasting requires a longer roasting time compared to light roasting, allowing the beans to develop more complex flavors.
- Dark Roast:
- Characteristics: Dark roast coffee beans are dark brown to nearly black in color and have a shiny, oily surface. The oils that appear on the surface result from the prolonged roasting process.
- Flavor Profile: Dark roasts tend to have bold, smoky, and roasty flavors. The original characteristics of the coffee bean are often overpowered by the roasting process, leading to a more consistent, intense taste.
- Body: Dark roasts typically have a full and heavy body, often described as robust.
- Roasting Time: Dark roasting requires the longest roasting time, and it involves taking the beans beyond the "first crack" stage, where the beans release their moisture and expand.
COFFEE: What's the deal with decaf coffee? How is it made?
Decaf coffee, short for "decaffeinated coffee," is a type of coffee that has had most of its caffeine content removed. This allows people to enjoy the taste and aroma of coffee without the stimulating effects of caffeine. We use the Swiss Water Process to decaffeinate. In this method, green (unroasted) coffee beans are soaked in hot water to extract caffeine and flavor compounds. The water is then passed through activated charcoal filters to remove caffeine. The beans are dried and roasted to produce decaf coffee.

FAQs
COLD BREW: What is cold brew coffee?
Cold brew coffee is a brewing method in which coarsely ground coffee beans are steeped in cold water over an extended period, usually around 24 hours. The slow steeping process extracts flavors, caffeine, and compounds from the coffee, resulting in a smooth, less acidic, and often more concentrated coffee concentrate. Cold brew coffee is typically served over ice or diluted with water, milk, or other additives to create a refreshing and flavorful cold beverage.
COLD BREW: How is cold brew coffee different from iced coffee?
Cold brew coffee involves steeping coarsely ground coffee in cold water for an extended time, resulting in a smooth, less acidic flavor, typically diluted before serving. Iced coffee, on the other hand, is brewed hot and then chilled before being poured over ice, which can result in bacteria formation.
COLD BREW: How long does cold brew coffee need to steep?
- Short Steep (12 hours): This will result in a lighter and less concentrated cold brew with milder flavors and less bitterness.
- Standard Steep (16-18 hours): This is a common steeping time that yields a balanced cold brew with a good mix of flavor and strength.
- Extended Steep (24 hours) *Recommended: Longer steeping times can result in a stronger, more concentrated cold brew with more pronounced flavors.
COLD BREW: Is cold brew coffee stronger than hot coffee?
Cold brew coffee is often more concentrated in terms of flavor and caffeine content compared to hot-brewed coffee. However, it's important to note that the strength of cold brew coffee can vary based on factors such as the coffee-to-water ratio, steeping time, and how much it's diluted before consumption.
COLD BREW: What are the benefits of cold brew coffee?
Cold brew coffee offers a smoother and less acidic flavor compared to hot-brewed coffee, with reduced bitterness and customization options. It's a convenient and refreshing choice, often higher in caffeine concentration, and its longer shelf life makes it a versatile option for various coffee-based beverages.
COLD BREW: Is cold brew coffee more caffeinated?
Yes, cold brew coffee is often more caffeinated than traditional hot-brewed coffee. The extended steeping time in cold water allows for a more efficient extraction of caffeine from the coffee grounds, resulting in a higher caffeine concentration in the cold brew coffee. However, it's important to note that the final caffeine content can still vary based on factors like the coffee-to-water ratio and the degree of dilution when serving.
COLD BREW: How do you make your cold brew coffee pitcher packs?
We roast the cold brew coffee bean blend, grind it, and package it inside filter paper packs, then seal and package them. Making them easy to brew in any container without leaving messy cold brew grounds behind.
