From Brew to Brush: How One Artist Turns Coffee Filters Into Earthy Works of Art

At Drink Katy’s, we believe coffee isn’t just a morning ritual — it’s a spark for creativity, connection, and joy. And in the hands of Georgia-based artist, Elisabeth Simon, our very own large coffee filters are being transformed into breathtaking works of art. ☕🎨✨
Elisabeth began painting just a few years ago to decorate her home — but as the daughter of renowned seascape artist Zoltan Steiner, her creative spirit runs deep. Today, she’s a member of two art guilds in Georgia and creates stunning large-scale abstract pieces that have captured the attention of galleries, collectors, and most recently… Emory Hospital, where two of her newest paintings will be displayed for several months.
“I wanted to show you my latest 38x50 painting using your coffee filters,” Elisabeth shared. “The other is 24x36. They will be displayed at Emory Hospital for several months.”
How cool is that?! What started as a morning cup of coffee now has a second life hanging on the walls of a hospital — bringing calm, beauty, and inspiration to all who pass by. 💛

A Deeper Look Into Her Process
Elisabeth’s work is earthy, layered, and deeply textured — part of a mixed media collection inspired by nature and the raw beauty of the earth.
“I incorporate molding paste, gesso, sand, and many collage layers using coffee filters, tissue, and deli paper — all hand-stained in a limited palette,” Elisabeth explains. “Then I apply acrylic paints, ink, graphite, charcoal powder, and oil pastels. It’s a very intuitive process… I rearrange the pieces over and over until it’s just right.”

And featured here are five of her finished pieces:

All are rich in tone and texture, with our coffee filters adding a natural warmth that perfectly complements her signature neutral palette.

Meet the Artist: Elisabeth Simon
After a career as an international flight attendant, Elisabeth devoted her time to teaching children with special needs — using art as a tool to help them feel joy and success in the classroom. Now, she paints with purpose and passion, creating artwork that’s both beautiful and emotionally resonant.
Her goal?
To bring joy, thoughtfulness, and beauty into the spaces we live in. To help others create sanctuaries they love. 🌿
Every piece is signed with her maiden and married name — a heartfelt tribute to her late father and mentor, Zoltan Steiner. And her favorite quote, by Winston Churchill, says it all:
“Success is not final, and failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”
You can find Elisabeth’s work locally in Alpharetta, GA.
